US presses China over currency in economy talks

BEIJING (AP) — U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said Washington supports more appreciation for China's tightly controlled currency rise in value as the two sides opened a high-level economic dialogue.

Complaints that a weak Chinese yuan distorts trade are a key issue for U.S. officials at the economic track of the annual Strategic and Economic Dialogue between the world's two biggest economies.

In prepared remarks, Geithner said Washington considers "particularly important" the promise of a stronger yuan in China's latest five-year development plan.

Chinese officials have said, however, that future gains by the yuan are likely to be limited, setting up a possible clash with Washington.
