TiECON Chennai 2011 entrepreneur conclave at Chennai Trade Centre

The fourth edition of Tamil Nadu's largest entrepreneur conclave, TiECON Chennai 2011 was held at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam today, focusing on the theme 'Opportunity - See it, Size it, Seize it. Suresh Krishna, CMD, Sundram Fasteners Limited was the Chief Guest and gave away 'The TiE Chennai Entrepreneur Awards 2011'.

The first session started off with Suresh Krishna inaugurating the event by lighting a traditional lamp followed by TiECON President's welcome speech. Lakshmi Narayanan, President of TiE Chennai said: "In an increasingly global and dynamic business environment, it is important for entrepreneurs to think out of the box and leverage technology to develop innovative solutions that help address current gaps and needs. Being one of the most active organisations supporting entrepreneurs in this region, TiE Chennai is focused on creating opportunities not only for entrepreneurs in fast growing sectors such as technology, but also relatively untapped ones like agriculture, social sector, infrastructure, healthcare, education and more. TiECON Chennai 2011 is a unique platform and a hub for collaboration among diverse participants that includes succesful entrepreneurs, mentors, industry bodies and regulators. The conference is aiming at playing a pivotal role in creating success stories in Tamil Nadu".

Detailing the programme that has been planned at TiECON CHENNAI 2011, R Narayanan, Conference Chairman said: "This year's event is celebrating the spirit of innovation among entrepreneurs. Over 1,500 entrepreneurs, business students and service providers are attending the event, which provides insights on opportunities in largely untapped sectors such as food, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, social sector, education etc. The TiE Chennai Entrepreneur Awards are presented across ten categories including the Dronacharya Award for mentoring, Award for Social Entrepreneur, Enterpreneur of the Year Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. What is more, the annual LIBA-TiE Chennai Business Plan competition is being showcased this year as well and enters its fourth edition. For the first time, the top five business plans are being given the option to be incubated at the CK Prahalad Centre for Emerging India that is being housed at Loyola Institute of Business Administration. Besides that, TieCON is providing adequate opportunities for networking and for budding entrepreneurs to talk about their projects, get new ideas, interact with mentors and meet potential investors. We are looking forward to engage with entrepreneurs and successful business leaders at this event".

This was followed by a nostalgic discussion about Suresh Krishna's achievements over several decades. Suresh Krishna shared past experiences with the moderators: Gopal Srinivasan, CMD, TVS Capital Funds and Govindraj Ethiraj, Founder Editor-inChief, Bloomberg UTV.

TiECON Chennai 2011 has multiple, parallel panel discussion and forums catering to different interest groups, planned in an innovative format. Dr V Sumantran, Vice Chairman of Ashok Leyland and Executive Vice Chairman of Hinduja Automotive and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairperson and Managing Director of Biocon interacted during a keynote panel titled 'The DNA of Success', to set the tone for the conference. The discussion was moderated by Lakshmi Pratury, Host and Curator - The INK Conference in association with TED.

Chitra Ramakrishna, Joint Managing Director, NSE spoke on the topic: 'Opportunities in small and medium enterprises', which was followed by LIBA-TiE Chennai Business Plan Awards. Lter, Satya Bansal, CEO of Brclays Securities India spoke about Opportunities in Philanthropy'.

'Opportunities Abound See it', which covered what was hot, what was not, among the opportunities that emerging India presented in diverse sectors. Dr Chandru Rajam, Visiting Professor, George Washington School of Business was the moderator. Mark Llistoselia, MD and CEO of Daimler Commercial Vehicles India; Raghavendra Rao, MD of Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceutivals; C Velan, Executive Director and CEO of TRIL Infopark and GV Ravishankar, Managing Director of Sequoia Capital took part in the panel discussion.


Suresh Krishna won the lifetime achievement award, while Dr Arun of Vasan Helthcare won the Entrepreneur of the Year award. BG Raghupath of the BGR Energy Systems won the Extreme Entrepreneur of the Year award, while Sridhar Vembu of Zoho bagged Serial Entrepreneur of the Year award. The Distinguished Family Entrepreneur Award went to L Ganesh of the Rane Group and Dr Kamala Selvaraj of GG Hospital won Woman Entrepreneur of the Year award. Dr Ashok Jhunjhunwala of the IIT/RTBI was conferred with Dronacharya Award, Dr Srinivas of Jeevan Blood Bank given away the Social Impact of the Year award and Vinoth Harith of CMO Axis was honoured with Startup Entrepreneur of the Year award.
