Maharashtra government has sanctioned Tata Memorial Hospital to allot five acres of land which is currently with the state-run Haffkine Institute, for constructing an extended wing, in order to meet its demand for more beds at the cancer hospital. Under the ambit of the central government, the hospital in Parel stands on four acres of land. The new plot allotted is across the road.
The land will be exclusively utilized by the hospital to set up dedicated cancer treatment wings for women and children. Apart from this, it will also host a hydrogen beam therapy centre.
Recntly, the hospital has only 700 beds to deal with over three lakh patients seeking treatment from the institute.
“The hospital had asked for more land, but we have just five acres with us which we have decided to give at a nominal lease rate for 30 years.
Vijaykumar Gavit, medical education minister said “The other land is with the BMC for which they will have to approach the municipal body.”
The Centre declared allocation of Rs 450 crore to the hospital for strengthening its facilities and they have already purchased equipment to be kept there.
The Haffkine Institute was not ready to part with the land and had made a request to the government to treat the hospital as a sub-lessee which would give it some additional funds through lease. This was, however, not accepted by the cabinet.
