Sona Koyo to invest Rs 800 million for capacity expansion

Sona Koyo Steering Systems Limited (SKSSL), the flagship company of the Sona Group, currently the largest manufacturer of steering systems for the passenger car and utility vehicle market in India is spending around Rs 800 million on ramping up its production capacity. Surinder Kapur told journalists in Delhi, while attending the SIAM Conclave that the firm targets current fiscal's sales to increase 20 percent as demand for auto parts are increasing like never before in the burgeoning auto industry".


The firm's alliance partner, JTEKT Corporation is the market leader in Japan and in the recent past announced a merger with Toyota Machine Works. Post this merger, JTEKT has become the world's largest steering systems manufacturer. The company also has a technical collaboration with Mando Corporation, Korea.

As part of its globalisation strategy, the company has acquired a position in Fuji Autotech France, SAS, the fourth largest steering system supplier in Europe. Via Fuji Autotech, The Sona Group footprint extends to Eastern Europe and South America.

Established in 1985, Sona Koyo Steering Systems is the group's flagship company, and the largest manufacturer of steering systems in India, catering to passenger cars, utility vehicles and light commercial vehicles. Sona Koyo has technical and financial collaboration with JTEKT Corporation, Japan (formally known as Koyo Seiko Co. Ltd.), the largest producer of passenger vehicles' steering systems in the world.


Sona Koyo's customers include major vehicle manufactures in India such as Maruti Suzuki India, Toyota Kirloskar India, Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors India and Mahindra-Renault. Independently, as well as through its network of overseas joint-venture partners, it exports high quality precision products to the US, Europe and Japan.


The plant is located in Gurgaon, Haryana near Delhi which has close proximity to Maruti Suzuki. This plant has a total site area of 56,970 metres, with a total floor area of 14,125 metres. Besides this plant, the firm also has a facility in Chennai with a 56,970 metres land area and 10,890 metres floor area. What is more, the company's plant in Dharuhera has 20,117 metres with a total floor area of 9,255 metres.
