The Chennai Corporation Council has voted resolution approving the amendment to facilitate the enforcement of CCTV surveillance Camera in jewelry shops and petrol bunks. This amendment is made mandatory for obtaining and renewal of trade license.

The resolution, moved yesterday had approved the amendment to by-laws under Section 349(29) of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act 1919 for securing safety in general. This resolution forces the installation of CCTV Camera in all ATM counters, shopping malls, Jewelry shops, petrol filling stations and all business centres..
As this decision was initiated by the State Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa and swung into action by district collectors and police officials as early as in November 2011, in fact, it has become more significant as the police officials could crack the case of the murder of a jeweler, with the help of CCTV.
Under the amended provisions of the by-laws, ‘every trader should submit a plan clearly stating the strategic spots for CCTV Camera Installation’.
The by-law clearly says that the traders should maintain the CCTV properly and in the event of the authorities finding few CCTVs not functioning, then the Corporation will either suspend or even cancel the license at any time on the grounds of public safety.
